The 6th Annual FNA 5K will take place September 22, 2012 at Thompson Park in Monroe Township, NJ. All proceeds from this year’s event will be dedicated to the Trust Fund of Jake and Ben Swomiak as well as Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD). Jake is 13 and is a 7th grader at Millstone Township Middle School, his brother Ben is 11 and attends the Millstone Township Elementary School. Both boys suffer from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Please visit www.jakebenmd.com for Jake and Ben’s full story.

Muscular dystrophies are a group of disorders that cause muscle weakness. Duchenne is one of the most common types of muscular dystrophy. It causes muscle cells to break down and eventually die, so muscles become progressively weaker. Duchenne muscular dystrophy usually only affects boys, but it can very rarely affect girls too. About one in 3500 boys are born with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

PPMD’s mission is to improve the treatment, quality of life and long term outlook for all individuals affected by Duchenne muscular dystrophy. This organization focuses on research for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), which is the fastest progressing form of muscular dystrophy. Please visit the PPMD website for complete information. www.parentprojectmd.org

FNA is proud to partner with Jake and Ben and PPMD for the benefit of the children and families dealing with this devastating disorder. Please save the date and plan on joining us in September to run or walk, sponsor or volunteer. Donations are also appreciated.

Friends and Neighbors in Action (FNA) is a non-profit organization that assists those who suffer from serious chronic and debilitating diseases. We fund research, education, and community support programs to assist in finding cures and improving patient care and quality of life. So far, FNA has raised over $150,000 to lend a hand to those in need. Through joint events with established charity organizations, FNA provides support to a variety of causes that affect the central New Jersey community, both at the organizational and individual family levels. Our support ranges from long-term goals, such as funding research, to individual emergencies. We can quickly mobilize the community to help a family in need.
